Reagan’s Unity Principal
Today I am flying the South Carolina flag. Everything is relatively calm, politically and it is a good time for reflection and planning. There is a proposal by several Republican National Committee Members that Republican Candidates should be able to pass a “litmus” test being called “Reagan’s Unity Principal”.
A Litmus test to be a Republican?
How many Republicans today would sign on to 8 of out 10 of the following?
We support smaller government, smaller national debt, lower deficits and lower taxes by opposing bills like Obama’s “stimulus” bill;
- We support market-based health care reform and oppose Obama-style government run healthcare;
- We support market-based energy reforms by opposing cap and trade legislation;
- We support workers’ right to secret ballot by opposing card check;
- We support legal immigration and assimilation into American society by opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants;
- We support victory in Iraq and Afghanistan by supporting military-recommended troop surges;
- We support containment of Iran and North Korea, particularly effective action to eliminate their nuclear weapons threat;
- We support retention of the Defense of Marriage Act;
- We support protecting the lives of vulnerable persons by opposing health care rationing, denial of health care and government funding of abortion; and,
- We support the right to keep and bear arms by opposing government restrictions on gun ownership
The above principals are being proposed by several members of the Republican National Committee and will presented to the Republican meeting in January. How will the RNC respond to this proposal?
The Bottom Line
How will the RNC Respond and what will it mean?
It will be interesting to see how the RNC responds to this and it is actually a “litmus test” for the Party, not just the budding candidates. If this proposal is flatly rejected, then it will be a clear signal to the Conservatives that the Republican Party has gone to the dark side … and alternatives will be sought, and frankly, the alternatives seem to hold more promise.
In the Meantime …($$$)
Until the Republicans make up their mind, probably the best place for a Conservative Independent to offer financial support and political support is through the Senate Conservatives Fund. This way you can be assured your contributions will not go to a Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins, Republicans who would never pass the above “litmus” test were it to become part of the fabric of the Republican Party.
It will be interesting to see how the Republicans respond to this proposal
… we’ll be watching in January.
